Sizing an Air Compressor for a Home Garage

Most people buy a compressor by tank size, discover it cannot run an impact wrench, and buy a second one. The number that decides everything is CFM.

The spec that matters

CFM at 90 psi — cubic feet per minute of air delivered at working pressure. Every air tool has a CFM requirement, and if the compressor cannot supply it, the tool works for a few seconds and then waits.

Ignore “peak horsepower” entirely; it is an unregulated marketing figure. “SCFM” is CFM corrected to standard conditions, and near enough the same thing for our purposes.

Note the split between intermittent and continuous. A nailer fires a burst and stops; a sander runs for minutes. A small compressor keeps up with the first and never with the second.

The sizing rule

Find your thirstiest tool, add 30%, and buy at least that CFM.

An impact wrench at 5 CFM wants a compressor delivering 6.5 CFM at 90 psi. That lands you in the 3–5 hp, 60-gallon single-stage range for continuous use, or a 20–30 gallon unit if you only need short bursts.

What the tank actually does

The tank is a buffer, not a supply. It lets you exceed the pump’s CFM for a short time, then you are limited by the pump.

  • A big tank with a weak pump gives you 40 seconds of grinding and then a long wait.
  • A small tank with a strong pump cycles constantly but keeps working.

For intermittent work, a bigger tank genuinely helps and means fewer motor starts. For continuous work, it buys you almost nothing.

Practical picks

Trim, inflation, blowing off, occasional brad nailing — pancake or hotdog, 6 gallons, 2–3 CFM. Inexpensive, portable, loud.

General garage: impact wrench, ratchet, short grinder bursts — 20–30 gallon vertical, 4–5 CFM. The realistic sweet spot for most home garages.

Sanding, spraying, blasting — 60 gallon, 10+ CFM, two-stage if the budget allows. This is a 240 V appliance that lives in one place, not a portable tool.

The parts people forget

  • 240 V wiring. Anything above about 2 hp continuous wants a dedicated circuit. Factor an electrician into the budget.
  • Moisture management. Compressed air carries water, and water ruins paint work and rusts tools from the inside. You want at minimum a water separator; a desiccant dryer if you spray.
  • Hose diameter. A 1/4-inch hose chokes a tool that needs 8 CFM no matter what the compressor delivers. Use 3/8-inch, and keep runs short.
  • Noise. A cheap direct-drive oil-free unit is genuinely unpleasant to be near — 90 dB or more. Belt-driven oil-lubricated units are quieter and last longer, at more cost and some maintenance.

Maintenance that decides its lifespan

Drain the tank after every session. Water pools at the bottom and rusts the tank from the inside, and a rusted tank is a pressure vessel with a hole developing in it. Oil-lubricated pumps also want their oil checked and changed on schedule.

Single-stage vs two-stage

Single-stage pumps compress air once, to a maximum of around 135 psi. Cheaper, lighter, and adequate for everything on the list above up to continuous sanding.

Two-stage pumps compress twice through separate cylinders with an intercooler between, reaching 175 psi and running cooler at high duty cycles. They cost significantly more and they last longer under sustained load.

The practical dividing line is duty cycle — the proportion of time the pump can run. A cheap oil-free unit may be rated for 50%; a good two-stage will run continuously. If you plan to spray a whole car or blast a chassis, that distinction decides whether the compressor survives the job.

For a home garage doing intermittent work, single-stage is the right answer and the money is better spent on CFM and a bigger tank.

Oil-free vs oil-lubricated

Oil-free pumps use coated cylinders and PTFE rings. No maintenance, lighter, and they deliver genuinely oil-free air — which matters for spraying. They are also much louder and wear out faster, typically 500–2,000 hours.

Oil-lubricated pumps are quieter, cooler, and last many times longer. They need the oil level checked and changed, they must sit level, and they pass a small amount of oil mist into the air, so spraying needs a coalescing filter.

For anything that lives in one place and gets used regularly, oil-lubricated is the better tool.

Plumbing the garage

Once the compressor is fixed in place, the pipework matters as much as the pump.

  • Use 3/4-inch or 1/2-inch pipe for the main run, not 3/8. Pressure drop over a long small-bore run will starve a tool that the compressor could otherwise supply.
  • Slope the run slightly back toward the compressor or toward drop legs, so condensate collects where you can drain it rather than in your tools.
  • Fit drop legs with a drain valve at each outlet — a vertical tee down past the outlet, so water falls out rather than travelling on.
  • Do not use PVC pipe. It is not rated for compressed air, and it fails by shattering into fragments. Copper, black iron, or a proper aluminium modular system.
  • Put a regulator and filter at the point of use, not only at the tank.

Air treatment, in order

Compressed air leaves the pump hot, wet, and carrying oil mist. Each stage of treatment removes something different:

  1. Tank drain — bulk water. Non-negotiable, daily.
  2. Water separator / particulate filter — droplets and rust. Enough for impact tools and blowing off.
  3. Coalescing filter — oil aerosol. Needed before spraying.
  4. Desiccant dryer or refrigerated dryer — remaining vapour. Needed for quality paintwork and for plasma cutting.

Skipping stage 3 and 4 and then spraying is the classic route to fisheyes in a finish you spent a weekend preparing.

Noise and where it lives

A direct-drive oil-free unit at 90 dB in an attached garage is unpleasant enough that you will use it less. Belt-driven oil-lubricated units run around 75–80 dB, which is a large perceptual difference.

If the compressor must live near living space, budget for a belt-drive unit, put it on rubber isolation feet, and consider a remote intake to move induction noise outside. Do not box it in without ventilation — these pumps are air-cooled and need airflow.
