Car Won't Start but Makes a Clicking Noise: How to Diagnose It

You turn the key, the dash lights come on, and instead of the engine turning over you get a click. The specific pattern of that click narrows the problem down to one of four things before you touch a tool.

Step 1: Check battery voltage

With the engine off, a healthy 12 V battery reads 12.6 V. At 12.2 V it is half discharged; below 12.0 V the starter will usually only click.

Put a multimeter across the terminals, then have someone crank while you watch. If the reading collapses below about 9.6 V during cranking, the battery is the problem even if it looked fine at rest.

Step 2: Clean and torque the terminals

Corrosion on a terminal adds resistance, and the starter is the highest-current load in the car, so it is the first thing to fail. Disconnect the negative terminal first, wire-brush both posts and clamps, reconnect negative last, and tighten until the clamp cannot be twisted by hand.

This alone fixes a surprising share of no-start clicks.

Step 3: Test the ground strap

Measure resistance between the engine block and the battery negative post. You want essentially zero — under 0.5 Ω. Anything higher means the strap is corroded internally and needs replacing, and it will mimic a failing starter exactly.

Step 4: Tap test the starter

With the transmission in park and the parking brake set, have someone crank while you tap the starter body firmly with a mallet. If it then spins, the brushes inside are worn and the starter needs replacing. This is a diagnostic trick, not a repair — it will strand you again.

When to stop and call someone

Stop if you find fuel or coolant where it should not be, if the battery case is swollen or leaking, or if you would need to get under the car without proper stands. A tow costs less than a crush injury.

Testing the starter circuit properly

The tap test tells you a starter is worn but not why a good one is not turning. For that, measure voltage drop while cranking — it finds the bad connection that a resistance test will miss entirely.

Set your meter to DC volts and, with a helper cranking, measure:

Anything above these figures is voltage being wasted as heat in a connection rather than delivered to the motor. A starter needs 200–400 amps at the moment of engagement, and half a volt lost across a corroded terminal is a large fraction of the energy available.

This is why a battery that tests fine and a starter that tests fine can still produce nothing but a click. The fault is the path between them.

The solenoid trigger

The heavy cable carries the current; a thin wire from the ignition switch tells the solenoid to close. If that trigger wire never gets voltage, you get silence rather than a click.

With the key at the start position, you should see battery voltage at the starter’s small S terminal. If it is absent, work backwards through:

  • The neutral safety switch on an automatic, which must confirm park or neutral. Try starting in neutral rather than park — if it starts, the switch or its adjustment is the fault.
  • The clutch pedal switch on a manual.
  • The starter relay, which is usually a plug-in relay in the engine bay fuse box. Swapping it with an identical relay elsewhere in the box is a two-minute test.
  • The ignition switch itself, which wears out on high-mileage cars.

Cold weather makes all of this worse

Two things happen at once as temperature drops: battery capacity falls substantially, and engine oil thickens so the starter has more work to do. A battery that is marginal in September fails in the first cold snap, which is why no-start calls cluster on the same morning across a whole city.

If your car cranks slowly but starts in mild weather, treat that as a warning rather than a quirk. Have the battery load tested before winter — most auto parts shops do it free, and it takes a few minutes.

Jump starting without causing damage

If you need to get moving before diagnosing:

  1. Both engines off. Connect positive to positive first.
  2. Connect the negative clamp to the donor battery’s negative, then the other negative clamp to a bare metal engine ground point on the dead car, not its battery terminal. This keeps any spark away from the battery, which vents hydrogen.
  3. Start the donor car, let it run a few minutes to put some charge across.
  4. Start the dead car, then remove the clamps in reverse order.

Do not use a jump start as a diagnosis. If the car starts on jump leads and dies when disconnected, the charging system is at fault, not the starter — and driving it will strand you again once the battery is empty.

The five-minute version

Rapid clicking with dim lights: battery. One clunk then nothing: solenoid engaged, motor stuck — tap test, then measure voltage drop across the cables. One click with bright lights: starter or ground. No click at all: check the trigger wire, the neutral safety switch, and the relay. In every case, clean and torque the terminals first, because it costs nothing and it is the answer more often than any part you could buy.
