Car Battery Drains Overnight: Finding the Parasitic Draw
If your car starts fine after a drive but is dead the next morning, you either have a battery that no longer holds charge or a circuit that keeps drawing current after the car is asleep. The test that separates them takes ten minutes.
First, rule out the battery itself
Charge the battery fully, then disconnect the negative cable and leave it overnight. If it is still at 12.6 V in the morning, the battery is fine and you have a parasitic draw. If it has dropped on its own with nothing connected, the battery has an internal short and needs replacing.
This step matters because a parasitic-draw hunt on a bad battery wastes an afternoon.
What “normal” looks like
Modern cars never fully switch off. The body control module, alarm, and keyless entry receiver all sip current. Together they should settle to:

A 60 Ah battery at 50 mA lasts weeks. At 500 mA it is flat in five days. At 2 A it is dead overnight.
Measuring the draw
Set your multimeter to its 10 A DC range and put it in series with the negative cable: disconnect the cable, clip the meter between the cable end and the battery post. Current now flows through the meter.
Then wait. This is the part people skip. Modules stay awake for 20 to 45 minutes after the doors are locked, and readings during that window mean nothing. Lock the car, walk away, and come back before reading.
Do not open a door to check the meter — you will wake everything up and restart the clock. Route the meter leads out through a window before you lock up, or read it through the glass.
Isolating the circuit
Once you have a number above spec, pull fuses one at a time and watch the meter. The fuse that drops the reading is your circuit. Do it methodically, starting with the interior box.
Common culprits, roughly in order:
- Glovebox, trunk, or vanity lights whose switch has failed closed. Feel for warmth on the bulb after the car has sat.
- Aftermarket accessories — dashcams, stereos, alarms, trackers, phone chargers wired to a constant-hot circuit rather than a switched one.
- A failing alternator diode, which lets current run backwards into the stator. Measure across the alternator’s B+ terminal specifically.
- A door or hatch latch switch that thinks the door is open, keeping the body module awake indefinitely.
- A blower or fuel pump relay with welded contacts.
When a fuse pull does not settle it
If pulling every fuse leaves a draw, it is upstream of the fuse box — usually the starter cable, the alternator, or an ignition switch. This is where a workshop with a proper current clamp gets there faster than you will.
A note on measurement error
Meters on their 10 A range have poor resolution at low currents; many read to 10 mA at best. That is fine for finding a 500 mA fault and useless for arguing about whether 45 mA or 55 mA is correct. If you need precision, use a low-current clamp meter or a dedicated draw tester.
Stop-gap while you diagnose
A battery maintainer on a garage outlet will keep the car startable. It does not fix anything, and a draw big enough to flatten a battery overnight is a fire risk in a small number of cases — a chafed wire, a relay running hot. Do not leave it on a maintainer indefinitely and call it solved.
Battery testing that actually means something
Before or after the draw hunt, it is worth knowing whether the battery itself is sound. Three tests, in increasing usefulness:
Resting voltage — the figures above. Quick, but a battery can read 12.6 V and still fail under load.
Load test — applies a heavy draw for 10–15 seconds while watching voltage. Should stay above 9.6 V at room temperature. Most parts shops do this free.
Conductance test — the handheld testers shops use now. They estimate cold cranking amps against the battery’s rating and are reasonably reliable, though they can be fooled by a surface charge. Drive the car or leave the battery a few hours before testing.
Note the rated CCA on the battery label and compare it to what the test reports. A battery delivering under about 70% of its rating is on the way out regardless of what the voltage says.
Charging it properly
A flat battery recovered by driving is rarely fully recharged — alternators are designed to maintain a battery, not to bulk-charge one. Repeated shallow cycling is what kills them.
Use a smart charger with an AGM or lithium mode as appropriate. Charging a sealed AGM battery on an old-fashioned high-current charger will damage it, and lithium batteries need a charger that knows their chemistry.
A conventional flooded battery discharged and left flat begins sulphating within days, and past a few weeks the damage is permanent. If a car is going to sit, either put a maintainer on it or disconnect the negative terminal.
Storage and seasonal cars
For a vehicle sitting more than a month:
- A maintainer, not a trickle charger. A maintainer monitors and tops up; an unregulated trickle charger will eventually boil the electrolyte.
- Disconnect the negative terminal if there is no power available. This loses radio presets and, on some cars, requires a relearn procedure — check the manual before doing it on anything modern.
- A battery isolator switch is a cheap permanent solution on a classic or a project car.
Never leave a lead-acid battery flat over winter in an unheated space. A discharged battery freezes at around -8 °C; a charged one at about -60 °C. A frozen battery is scrap and can split its case.
Replacing it on a modern car
Two things that surprise people:
Battery registration. Many cars since roughly 2010 have intelligent charging that adapts to the battery’s age. Fitting a new battery without registering it via a diagnostic tool means the car keeps charging it as though it were old — which overcharges a new battery and shortens its life significantly. BMW, VW group, Volvo, and others all do this.
Memory savers. Losing power can require relearning throttle position, window positions, and sometimes steering angle. A memory saver plugged into the OBD port avoids that, but note that many keep the whole car live, so you cannot then work safely on the electrics.
Match the specification, not just the size: the same physical case may come in flooded, EFB, and AGM versions, and a car designed for AGM with start-stop will destroy a plain flooded battery within a year.
