When to Replace Brake Pads: Thickness and Noise Explained

Brake pads are consumable, and the mileage figure in your owner’s manual is a guess about someone else’s driving. The only number that matters is the friction material you have left.

The measurement

Most wheels let you see the outer pad through the spokes with a torch. Measure with a tyre-tread depth gauge or a cheap plastic pad gauge. If you can only see one pad, remember the inner pad often wears faster because the caliper piston pushes it first.

Uneven wear between inner and outer on the same wheel points at a sticking caliper slide pin, not at the pads. Replacing the pads without freeing the pin means doing the job again in 8,000 miles.

The noises, decoded

A high squeal that changes with speed and disappears when you brake is usually the wear indicator — a metal tab designed to contact the disc when material gets low. It is telling you 2–3 mm remain.

Grinding that you also feel through the pedal is metal on metal. The friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting your disc. Every mile adds a disc to the bill.

A single squeak at low speed in the morning that goes away is usually surface rust flashing off the disc overnight. Harmless.

Rhythmic pulsing through the pedal is disc thickness variation, not pads. Pads will not fix it.

Things that are not pad wear but feel like it

  • A soft pedal that sinks under steady pressure is a hydraulic problem — air, a failing master cylinder, or a leaking line. This is more urgent than pads.
  • Pulling to one side under braking is usually a seized caliper or a collapsed flexible hose.
  • A grinding that appears only when turning is more likely a wheel bearing.

What actually drives pad life

Weight and how you drive, more than anything else. An EV with regenerative braking can go 80,000 miles on original pads; the same driver in a heavy SUV in city traffic might see 25,000. Towing, mountain roads, and short stop-start journeys all shorten it.

Front pads wear roughly twice as fast as rears on most cars because weight transfers forward under braking.

Replacing them

Pads are one of the more approachable jobs, but it belongs in the “know your limits” category. Specifically:

  • The car must be on proper jack stands, never a jack alone.
  • Caliper bolts have real torque specs and many are single-use stretch bolts.
  • Pistons on electric parking brake systems must be retracted with a scan tool, not wound back by hand. Forcing them damages the actuator.
  • New pads need bedding in — a series of controlled stops per the manufacturer’s instructions — or you get glazing and a permanent judder.

If any of those give you pause, this is a reasonable job to pay for. Brakes are the one system where a mistake does not give you a second attempt.

Discs wear too, and they have a minimum

Pads are the consumable, but discs have a service limit stamped or cast into them — usually on the hub face or the edge, marked “MIN TH” followed by a figure in millimetres.

Measure disc thickness with a micrometer at several points around the face, about 10 mm in from the outer edge. Two things disqualify a disc:

  • Below the minimum thickness. There is no machining it back; it is scrap. Below-minimum discs crack and they cannot absorb heat.
  • More than about 0.05 mm of thickness variation around the face, which is what produces pedal pulsation.

A common misconception is that a pulsating pedal means “warped” discs. Discs rarely warp. What usually happens is uneven pad deposit transfer onto the disc face, or thickness variation from a stuck caliper. Both feel identical from the driver’s seat.

Rule of thumb: discs typically last two sets of pads. Fitting new pads to a disc near its minimum is a false economy, because the new pads bed to a worn surface.

Reading the wear pattern

The pads tell you what else is wrong.

Fitting new pads without addressing any of these means repeating the job.

Brake fluid is part of the same system

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs water from the air through the flexible hoses and the reservoir. Water lowers the boiling point, and fluid that boils gives you a pedal that goes to the floor under repeated heavy braking.

Most manufacturers specify a fluid change every two years regardless of mileage. It is cheap, and it is the most-skipped item on any service schedule. If you do not know when it was last done, assume it needs doing.

Test strips and refractometers exist, but on an unknown history the sensible answer is to change it rather than measure it.

Bedding in new pads

New pads and discs need a controlled heat cycle to transfer an even layer of friction material onto the disc. Skip it and you get glazing, noise, and a judder that never goes away.

The general procedure — check the manufacturer’s, which takes precedence:

  1. Several moderate stops from about 30 mph, easing off before a full stop.
  2. Then several firmer stops from about 50 mph down to 10 mph, with no complete stop and no dragging.
  3. Then drive for ten minutes without heavy braking to let everything cool evenly.

Critically, do not come to a complete stop with your foot on hot brakes during bedding. Holding a hot pad against a hot disc is exactly how you create the uneven deposit that causes pulsation.

The honest cost comparison

Pads front and rear are an inexpensive part. Labour is most of a shop bill for this job, which is what makes it attractive to do yourself — but see the safety list above. If you are paying someone, ask whether the quote includes discs and fluid, because a pads-only quote against a pads-and-discs quote is not the same job and the difference is usually where the surprise arrives.

Measure the friction material only — the steel backing plate is not part of it. The inner pad often wears faster than the outer, and a big difference between them points at a sticking caliper rather than at the pads.
