Washing Machine Will Not Spin: Lid Switch, Belt, or Drain
A machine that will not spin is usually not a dead motor. Four things account for most of these, and the first two cost nothing to check.
Before anything: unplug it. Not switched off — unplugged.
1. Is it actually a drain problem?
Machines will not spin with water in the drum, by design. So a drum full of water is a drain fault, not a spin fault.
- Check the drain hose for a kink behind the machine, and that it is not pushed so far into the standpipe that it siphons or blocks.
- Clean the drain pump filter. Front-loaders have an access panel at the bottom front; expect a coin, a hair grip, and a surprising amount of water. Put a shallow tray down first.
- Listen at the start of the drain cycle. A pump humming with no water movement is blocked or seized; complete silence points at the pump or its control.
2. Load balance and the lid switch
Top-loaders will not spin with the lid open. The lid switch is a safety interlock and it is a common failure — a small plastic actuator breaks off, or the switch itself wears out. Press it manually with the machine plugged in only if you can do so without reaching into the drum; otherwise test it for continuity unplugged.
An unbalanced load stops the spin on almost every modern machine. A single heavy item — a bath mat, a duvet — throws it off. Redistribute and try again. If it spins with a balanced load, nothing is broken.
Front-loaders with worn shock absorbers or suspension rods will also abort a spin because they detect excessive movement. A machine that walks across the floor is telling you this.
3. The belt
Belt-driven machines (many top-loaders and some front-loaders) lose spin when the belt stretches, glazes, or breaks.
Tip the machine back or remove the rear panel and look. A belt should be tight enough that you can twist it about 90 degrees and no further. If it is loose, cracked, or shiny on the inside face, replace it. This is one of the more approachable appliance repairs.
Direct-drive machines have no belt — the motor drives the drum directly.
4. The parts that mean a real repair
Motor coupler (direct-drive top-loaders) — a plastic-and-rubber coupling between motor and transmission, designed to fail before the gearbox does. If the machine agitates weakly or not at all and the motor runs, this is likely. Cheap part, moderate job.
Clutch or transmission — grinding noises, or agitation but no spin.
Door lock assembly (front-loaders) — the machine will not start a spin if it cannot confirm the door is locked. Often a microswitch inside the assembly.
Drive motor or control board — the last things to suspect, not the first.

Where to stop
If the drum has significant play when you push it up and down, or you hear a metallic grinding on spin, the drum bearing is going. On many front-loaders the bearing is pressed into the outer tub, and replacing it means splitting the tub — frequently more than the machine is worth. Get a quote before buying parts.
Bearings, and how to tell before you spend
The drum bearing is the failure that decides whether a machine is worth keeping, so test for it before buying any other part.
With the machine empty and unplugged, grip the drum at the top and try to move it up and down, then in and out. A small amount of movement is normal on front-loaders with suspended tubs; more than a few millimetres of play at the shaft, or a gritty feel as you rotate it, is a failing bearing.
Then spin the empty drum by hand and listen. A healthy bearing is near-silent. A failing one rumbles, and the noise gets much louder under load at high spin speeds.
Rust-coloured water at the back of the drum or streaks down the rear of the machine is the bearing seal failing and letting water into the bearing. Once that has happened, the clock is running.
Why it matters commercially: on many front-loaders the bearing is pressed into a sealed outer tub that must be split or replaced entirely. That part plus labour frequently exceeds the value of a mid-range machine. Get a quote before ordering anything.
Suspension and why a machine walks
Front-loaders spin at 1,200–1,600 rpm, and the whole balance system is what keeps that from shaking the machine apart.
- Shock absorbers or dampers wear out and stop controlling movement. Symptoms are violent movement at spin and aborted spin cycles. They are replaceable and should always be done in pairs or fours.
- Counterweights are concrete blocks bolted to the tub. Their bolts loosen; check and retighten them.
- Levelling feet must all be in firm contact with the floor. A machine rocking on three feet will never balance a load. Adjust and lock the nuts.
- Suspension rods on top-loaders hold the tub from above and lose damping with age.
A machine that has walked across the floor repeatedly has often damaged its own suspension in the process, so fix the levelling first.
The drain pump filter, done properly
Worth its own note because it is the most common cause and the most often done badly.
- Unplug the machine.
- Put a shallow tray and towels down — there will be more water than you expect, and it comes out fast.
- Open the access panel, and if there is a small drain hose with a bung, use it to empty the machine before unscrewing the filter itself.
- Unscrew the filter, clear hair, coins, and debris, and check inside the housing with a torch for anything wedged past it.
- Feel the impeller through the housing. It should turn freely.
- Refit the filter fully — a partly-seated filter leaks onto the floor at the next cycle.
Do this every couple of months and most of this article never applies to you.
Habits that cause spin faults
- Overloading. A drum packed to the top cannot distribute weight, so the machine aborts spin. It also stresses the bearing.
- Washing single heavy items — one duvet or bath mat is the classic unbalanced load. Add a couple of towels to balance it.
- Leaving coins and clips in pockets. They end up in the pump.
- Using too much detergent, which leaves residue in the drain path and in the drum seal.
- Closing the door immediately after use. Leave it ajar so the seal dries; perished seals leak, and mould in the seal is unrelated to spinning but unpleasant.
