Drywall Anchors: Which Type Holds What Weight
Drywall is 12.5 mm of gypsum between paper. It has almost no strength on its own, so an anchor’s job is to spread load across as much of that panel as possible.
Ratings, honestly
Manufacturer figures are tested in ideal conditions on a single sheet. Halve them for real use, and halve them again for anything above head height or carrying children.

Shear vs tension
The direction of load matters more than the number.
- Shear (straight down the wall, like a picture) is what these ratings assume.
- Tension (pulling out of the wall, like the top bolts of a bookshelf that wants to tip) is much harder on an anchor.
A shelf loads its anchors in both, and the top row takes the tension. That is why a shelf that “should” hold 30 lb pulls out at 15.
What each type is actually for
Plastic expansion anchors — the beige ones that come free with everything. You drill a hole, tap them in, and the screw expands them. They hold very little and they hold worse over time. Fine for a lightweight picture frame; not fine for anything you would mind falling.
Self-drilling threaded anchors — chunky plastic or metal cones with coarse external threads. No pilot hole needed. Reasonable for towel bars and small fixtures, and easy to install straight. They fail if you overtighten and strip the gypsum.
Molly bolts — a metal sleeve that mushrooms behind the panel as you tighten. They grip well and stay in the wall if you remove the screw, which is convenient. They need a precise hole and they are hard to remove cleanly.
Toggle bolts — a spring-loaded metal wing that opens behind the panel. Strong, cheap, and the wings drop into the cavity if you take the bolt out. Need a hole big enough to pass the folded wings, which is a large hole to patch later.
Snap/strap toggles — a modern toggle on a plastic strap that holds the metal bar flat against the back of the panel while you tighten. The strongest drywall anchor available and worth the premium for anything heavy.
When to find a stud instead
For a TV mount, a grab bar, a wall-mounted cabinet, a heavy mirror, or anything a person might pull on, use studs. No anchor is the right answer.
Studs are usually at 16-inch centres (400 mm), sometimes 24. Find them with a magnet — it locates the drywall screws — or a stud finder, and confirm with a small nail before committing to a lag screw.
Grab bars in particular must go into studs or proper blocking. A grab bar that fails is being used at exactly the moment somebody needs it.
Two things that ruin an installation
- The hole being too big. Drill exactly the size stated. An oversized hole in gypsum cannot be recovered — move over an inch and start again.
- Overtightening. Every one of these anchors works by clamping the panel. Go past the point where it snugs and you crush the gypsum, and the anchor spins free with nothing left to grip.
Plaster and lath, and tile
None of the above ratings apply to plaster over lath — it is more brittle and crumbles around expansion anchors. Toggles work; expansion anchors generally do not. For tile, drill with a carbide or diamond bit at low speed with no hammer action, and anchor into whatever is behind it.
Finding studs reliably
Since studs beat every anchor, it is worth being good at finding them.
A strong magnet on a string is the most reliable low-tech method — it locates the steel drywall screws, which are in the studs. Slide it slowly; it will stick. Find two screws vertically in line and you have a stud centre.
Electronic stud finders work by detecting density change. They are quick and they produce false positives on plumbing, ducts, and double top plates. Verify before drilling.
Logic narrows the search: studs sit at 16-inch centres (400 mm) in most North American framing, 24-inch in some, and 400 or 600 mm centres in the UK. There is always a stud beside every window and door opening, and at every corner.
Confirm with a small nail through the drywall where the fixing will be hidden, or high up behind where the item will hang. A 2 mm hole is nothing; a lag screw into a water pipe is a very different afternoon.
What is behind the wall
Before drilling anything deeper than 25 mm, consider what shares that cavity:
- Electrical cables run vertically near outlets and switches, and horizontally along the top and bottom plates. Drilling directly above or below an outlet is the classic way to find one.
- Plumbing clusters near bathrooms and kitchens, on both sides of shared walls.
- Ducts in some walls, especially on ground floors below bathrooms.
A combination detector that flags live wires as well as studs costs little and is worth having. If in doubt, drill shallow and increase depth gradually rather than committing at full depth.
Load direction, worked through
A wall-mounted shelf illustrates why the ratings mislead. Suppose the shelf holds 30 lb of books at 250 mm depth, with two fixings at the top and two at the bottom 250 mm below.
The load acts downward at the shelf’s centre of gravity, which is out from the wall. That creates a moment that the top fixings resist in tension — pulling straight out of the wall — while the bottom fixings are pushed against it.
The tension at the top can easily be equal to or greater than the total weight, depending on the geometry. So a shelf with a 30 lb load can put 30 lb or more of pull-out force on two anchors, and pull-out is the failure mode anchors are worst at.
Practical consequences: deeper shelves need stronger fixings, and a shelf’s bottom fixings do far less work than its top ones. Where you can only reach one stud, put the top fixings into it.
Removing anchors and repairing the hole
- Plastic expansion anchors — drive them through into the cavity with a nail set, or pull them with pliers if the collar is proud. Do not try to unscrew them.
- Threaded anchors — unscrew with a screwdriver in the head slot.
- Molly bolts — remove the screw, then cut the collar flush with a knife and push the sleeve in.
- Toggles — remove the bolt and the wings fall into the cavity harmlessly.
Fill the hole with setting-type filler rather than lightweight spackle for anything over about 6 mm, since spackle shrinks and needs several coats. For holes over 25 mm, use a self-adhesive mesh patch or cut in a piece of drywall backed with a timber batten.
The short version
Light picture: any anchor. Towel bar or small shelf: threaded anchor or molly. Heavy shelf, cabinet, mirror: toggle or snap toggle, and prefer a stud. TV mount, grab bar, anything a person may pull on: studs, no exceptions.
